Impact of the internet and social networks on health research, information and communication

SHORT ABSTRACT OF THE WALK

Nowadays, it is difficult to think about activities of daily life that do not have any link with the internet and social networks, for example, to look for a recipe to cook, to check the valuation made by an establishment for other clients or to make the reservation of the next vacation (or the very declaration of the Rent). These same tools are being used in the field of health research to know, for example, what specific habits a population has at the time of eating or what sports practices are being carried out among social network users in a more efficient way. fast and accurate than the one provided by other methodologies.
However, in addition to these “classic” research questions in the field of health, the internet and social networks are also working on communication in health, both from official bodies and by the professionals themselves, seeking multiple objectives among which we find from promoting healthy practices (for example, promotion of breastfeeding) to increasing the general culture of the population (for example, reporting vaccines).
In this talk we will review some novel aspects of health research and communication through the internet and social networks and we will reflect on the potential of these tools both to acquire knowledge and to disseminate it.
