Summary: Device-to-Device Collaboration in Support of Community Health: The pervasiveness of sensing, computation, and communication has changed the potential landscape of pervasive community health applications that involve mobile and wearable devices interacting with one another. The plain "chattiness" of our everyday environments opens broad new possibilities for pervasive computing devices to opportunistically leverage each other. In the first part of the talk, I will present my group's research on BLEnd, a neighbor discovery protocol that makes it possible to design energy-efficient mechanisms for pervasive computing devices to share their sensed information with one another. The second part of the talk will describe how we use these direct interactions to support healthy behaviors within communities by integrating pervasive computing devices with "serious games" to promote improved health outcomes ranging from increasing the physical activity of school children to encouraging healthy behavior change in older adults suffering from heart failure.
